A pediatrician who has lived the worst fear of every parent has an important message for child caregivers everywhere.
Dr. Michael Milobsky was not scared when his daughter began to drown in a piece of pizza crust – he went directly to the training that he believes everyone should know.
“There is a key skill and knowledge that every parent has to save your child’s life at home, and that is how to manage drowning,” he said in a Tiktok video posted on August 12.
As a seven -year -old father, he had fortunately had to take advantage of his ability for his fifth child.
“Without knowing this, it would have been over,” he said. “Drowning is so important to know that you are able to act at the moment because with the time you call 9-1-1 and get help, the damage is done and may be permanent.”
The best way to prevent home drowning is not to let your child walk around and eat at the same time, Milobsky said.
He stressed that there are three important things to know to save the life of a child when it comes to drowning, which he demonstrated with a bear he called Phil.
Unpaid
Milobsky showed that, in his experience, this is mainly the case with children of little ones who may have been walking around with food in their mouths and drowned in it.
“Don’t blindly glue your finger in your baby’s mouth to try and attract everything that is there,” he said.
He explained that your child’s airway is in shape as a funnel, not a cylinder, and if the object is unintentionally pushed, it will become determined and impossible to remove.
If you can’t see what you are getting, it is best to avoid putting your finger next to your baby’s mouth.
Back
The second thing parents need to know, Milobsky said, is that if your child is drowning and coughing and sounding, let’s leave.
But if their ability to make sounds stop, you immediately interfere with rear strokes.
You have to hit the shoulder edges really hard “as if you are abusing them – so difficult,” he said.
For decades, Heimlich maneuver has been the de facto strategy of emergency for drowning, but research has linked the technique to damage to the ribs and heart valves and fractures in the stomach and food tube.
Hitting someone in the back directly between the shoulder blade can be just as effective and much less invasive. In 2023, there were about 1.7 deaths from drowning per 100,000 populations.
If this does not move the item, then you switch to abdominal inserts.
Abdominal inserts
You make inserts into the abdomen at the bottom of the breast bone, about two fingers down – but don’t spend too much time being ultra precise.
Once you find the space, place your fist there and push it inside and up as you can “as if you are trying to hurt your baby.”
This is the method that worked for his daughter and saved his life.
